Dems to host Andover candidate for U.S. House seat

ROCKPORT — The Rockport Democratic Town Committee plans to showcase one of the six Democratic candidates seeking to succeed U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Salem, during its monthly meeting this Saturday, June 20. The committee will host candidate and current state Rep. Tram Nguyen, D-Andover, at its meeting at 10 a.m. in the Brenner Room of the Rockport Public Library, 17 School St. Nguyen represents the 18th Essex District, which covers Andover, Boxford, North Andover and Tewksbury.
Nguyen now serves as chair of the Massachusetts House Committee on Climate Action and Sustainability and as a member of the Joint Committee on Financial Services. She previously served as vice chair of the House Committee on Steering, Policy, and Scheduling and as a member of the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development. Nguyen is a Vietnamese refugee, attorney and four-term state legislator. Prior to being elected as the first Vietnamese American woman in the Massachusetts Legislature, Nguyen was an attorney at Greater Boston Legal Services. She is the highest ranking Asian-American woman in the Massachusetts Legislature.
Rockport Democratic Town Committee Chair David Narkewicz said while the committee does not make endorsements in contested Democratic primaries, the committee wantedtoprovideaforumforallofthe candidates seeking to replace Moulton. Nguyen’sappearanceinRockport will mark the final candidate presentation to Rockport Democrats before the Sept. 1 Democratic primary.
“Voters in the 6th District are fortunate to have a diverse and talented group of candidates vying for the Democratic nomination on Sept. 1,” Narkewicz said. “We have appreciated their willingness to speak at our meetings and hope that Rockport voters will study their experience and positons on issues and select the best candidate best prepared to represent our community in Congress.”
At previous meetings in March, April and May, candidates Dan Koh, John Beccia, Rick Jackious (who has withdrawn from the race), Bethany Andres-Beck, Dr. Mariah Lancaster and Jamie Belsito spoke to Rockport residents. Each candidate was given 20 minutes to address the meeting and answer questions about their candidacy.
